Resumo em outra língua: This research aims to analyze the phoneme /R/ at the end of syllables in the cities of Itaguara and Itaúna, both located in the state of Minas Gerais, Brazil. It begins with a unsystematic finding – informal talking with inhabitants of each city – where a very curious behavior was observed: Inhabitants of Itaúna (Minas Gerais) use widely on their speaking the retroflex performance of the phoneme /R/, while in Itaguara (Minas Gerais) the same behavior does not happen. In other words, even if there is the performance of the phoneme /R/ in the speech of Itaguara inhabitants, it is not as common as in Itaúna inhabitants. With the fact that both cities have close relationship, it was expected that they would share the same linguistics traits, just like Labov (2008 [1972]) says: language and social relationships are inseparable. The overall goal of this paper was to describe the speaking of Itaguara and Itaúna citites, regarding the performance of the phoneme /R/, trying to explain this performance from the theoretical framework of the Theory of Linguistics Variation and Change (Labov, 1972). To the achievement of this research, a theoretical-methodological model was adopted, based on the Theory of Linguistics Variation and Change, also known as Quantitative Sociolinguistics. To the phonemic analysis, the Phonemic Model was used as a theoretical contribution. 20 informers were selected – 5 men and 5 women on each city – and the methods used to collect data were spontaneous oral narrative and interview. The data record was made with a digital recorder, and its listening with the software PRAAT, which allows among other things, to analyze the voice acoustically and to do editions and speech syntheses. The results confirmed what had already been asthmatically noticed: the retroflex phoneme /R/ has a high frequency of use on inhabitants of Itaúna city, while in Itaguara city the phoneme has a high alternance with other variants of the phoneme /R/, mainly with the unvoiced glottal fricative. Furthermore, with the research, it was possible to see that there may be in Itaguara city a change in progress. In other words, it is possible that the retroflex phoneme /R/ is getting out of usage by the inhabitants of Itagurara, due to the fact that its usage has been decreasing.
